Before I moved here last year, I had lived in Florida for most of my life, and I had no fucking clue what winter really was like. So during the past few months, I learned that it was worse than I ever imagined it could ever be. But this past week the temperature finally started to rise, and I (along with every other person in this city) am so very happy to actually want to go outside again. So in honor of the quickly approaching summertime, here are some wicked dubs.

Deadbeat - Port-Au-Prince // ~SCAPE

Dennis "Blackbeard" Bovell - Ites of Dub // MOVING TARGET

Keith Hudson - My Eyes Are Red Dub // PRESSURE SOUNDS

King Tubby meets Scientist - Wickedest Dub // BURNING SOUNDS

Lump - Dub Unity // FUTURE DUB

Mad Professor & Lee Perry - Drummer Boy Dub // ARIWA

Can - Flow Motion // EMI

Root 70 - Designer Groove // NONPLACE

Scientist - No Dub Island // BLOOD & FIRE

Rhythm & Sound - Dem Never Know (Sleeparchive Remix) // BURIAL MIX

----/----

PS - Thanks JMS for the introduction.

----/----

The United States of Shaman Slaying

----/----

Phew! Basically, I've just brought the kick drum in sooner, extended a few sections, and added a few sweeps and some delay to the song. My reasons for doing this are not entirely clear. I really don't like Fleetwood Mac that much. This song just happened to play while I drove up to Gainesville last weekend, and it just stayed planted in my head for the rest of my trip. Doing this edit seemed like a better use of my time than watching reruns of Seinfeld on the airplane.

I have also made a fairly long list of songs that I want to put up. These here are the start of that list. I'll post some more over the next week or so.

----/----

Axel Stranger - 'Departures' Mix (69:56)

1) Derek Holzer - Departure Time // SOUNDTRANSIT.NL
2) Alex Smoke - Don't See the Point (Henrik Schwarz Mix) // SOMA
3) STL - Strains Of Nowhere // PERLON
4) Canson - Beenden // STATTMUSIK
5) Christian Dittmann - Buena Decision // ECHOCHORD
6) Segeke - Yren // NIGHT DRIVE
7) Rhythm & Sound - See Mi Version (Basic Reshape) // BURIAL MIX
8) Troy Pierce - 25 Bitches (Berg Nixon ZigZag Remix) // MINUS
9) Tonepushers - Daydreamer (Jesse Somfay's Pass The Pillow Remix) // FADE
10) Extrawelt - 8000 // TRAUM SCHALLPLATTEN
11) Minilogue - City Boy // CROSSTOWN REBELS
12) Nathan Fake - Outhouse (Valentino Kanzyani Remix) // RECYCLED LOOPS
13) Alex Under - El Encuentro // PLUS 8
14) Damian Schwartz - Tu y Yo (Pilas Remix) // MÚPA
15) Heartthrob - Baby Kate (Sascha Funke Remix) // MINUS

----/----

Fleetwood Mac - World Turning (A. Besides being a great tasting beverage, it's also a great way to give those boring white t-shirts a hip, I-just-spilled-a-hot-beverage-on-myself-why-oh-why-the-fuck- did-I-get-out-of-bed-this-morning look!

- GreenpointUSA has its own webpage! And on it there is a link to something called a "pet dick" (yes, it is exactly what you are imagining it to be) and (man oh man it just keeps getting better) you can buy yourself one for a mere $13.69 + $5 S&H. This work of fine art is handmade in Williamsburg, Brooklyn, or as the locals prefer to call it, "the art capital of the world." Please, foax, act quickly coz supplies will not last!

- Serpico reminded me how good Al Pacino used to be. How could you not? It must on at least four or five DJ mixes that I've heard in the past few months. It seems to pop up everywhere and for good reason, too. (Apologies for the low bitrate. It's nearly impossible to find a copy of this song not ripped from a DJ mix.)

Hansepferd - BismarckE

I have no idea who Hansepferd is/are or what the hell is going on in this song...Where's the bunker? But when that synth bubbles up from behind her desperate vocal plea here, I just can't resist. I've had it on repeat all evening. Or at least since after I finally got to listen to LCD Soundsystem's work-out track, which is also fantastic. Unfortunately, I don't think I can put that up due to its size and DFA's particular prowess for keeping their tracks off the blogs. Dig around a bit and you can find it though.

----/----

Fluxblog's write-up on The Knife show at Webster Hall early this week is pretty spot on. Perhaps I set my expectations too high cuz Heartthrob's "Baby Kate" from the min2MAX comp earlier this year could not be more perfect, and Silent Shout--I mean, come on. No one can argue that it's not a brilliant record. But when the two get together the results are a bit less intriguing than I had imagined. I'm not giving up on it yet though. I think what I want is more from the chorus, or maybe I want it taken out. It's too melodic for the starkness that Heartthrob gives the song. Anyway, I provide; you decide.

The Knife - Like A Pen [Heartthrob Remix]

Heartthrob - Baby Kate

In other news, The Knife will be playing at Webster Hall in about a month which should be fantastic. Also, this month there are a few events going on in honor of Steve Reich's birthday. If you have a complex mass of neurons linked together to allow such wonders as vision, taste, olfaction, hearing and--if you're lucky--thought, then you should go to one of them. I personally will be attending a performance of Electric Counterpoint, Different Trains, and Music for 18 Musicians featuring Pat Metheny, Kronos Quartet and Steve Reich himself at Carnegie Hall on October 18th. Tickets may set you back a bit, but it can be and will be nothing but a repetitively riveting recital. There are also events at the Brooklyn Academy of Music and Lincoln Center that will no doubt be worth attending if you have the means.

Here's a piece by Reich. And, yes, they are all this good.

Steve Reich & Ensemble Avant Garde - Phase Patterns

----/----

Buy The Knife

Buy Heartthrob

Buy Steve Reich

D. Shostakovich

I checked out the inaugural Wordless Music Series concert on Monday night at Good-Faith Shepherd Church featuring Glenn Kotche, Nels Cline, Jenny Lin & Elliott Sharp. It was mighty good -- Glenn Kotche, in particular. If you have not listened to his solo album Mobile yet, then I would highly recommend that you take the time to do so. The man is an incredible percussionist -- calling him a drummer would be a bit of sin. His technique is impeccable, and he plays more instruments than many so-called "multi-instrumentalists" have ever even set their eyes upon. Here's a track from Mobile called "Monkey Chant." Apparently, it's based on this, but all I know is that it made me want to play drums more than anything I've ever witnessed.

Glenn Kotche - Monkey Chant

The rest of the show tried to reach this apex but never quite achieved it. Elliott Sharp seems like a phony, but that Jenny Lin can play piano for me any time.

And now for something totally different. Hot Snakes, perhaps the greatest rock band ever, released a live album recently, and, my God, it is fucking killer. I posted this track a long time ago, but here is the live version of it, which reminds me of weekends and California even more than before.

Hot Snakes - Plenty For All

----------

Buy Glenn Kotche

Buy Hot Snakes

Woot Wooh

Ahh...a day off. I quit working at The Strand yesterday. Well, I just didn't show up in the morning. I just couldn't take it - the dust, the mindlessness, the asshole employees (not everyone but more than a few). ***For some laugh-inducing Strand hatred, go here.*** So now I get a few days off until I start up full-time pulling espresso shots for crazy rich people living in the Upper East Side. But things could be worse - I could be doing what this guy (Chat With A Detroit Corpse Collector - NYT) does.

Moving on, I've just recently gotten back to listening to the stockpile of MP3s I have stored away that haven't been listened to yet, and I also just recently got my stereo set up. It's actually the only thing that I have set up in my room now - that and the bed. I don't even have a chair. So I can finally start getting some tracks back up on here.

First off - another one from Anja Schneider & Sebo K. I know I just posted the Magda remix of "Side Leaps" a few days ago, but this one's really great too. This is the B-side to "Side Leaps" that came out on Mobilee. The background noises in the beginning sound like missles raining down on a city in an old Nintendo game. I can't think of a particular title but the memory is there.

Anja Schneider & Sebo K - Rancho Relaxo

Up next is a track from the new My My 12" out on Playhouse and this one is every bit as good as their prior release for Playhouse w/ the excellent "Serpentine." I couldn't decide whether to put up the A- or B-side but went w/ the B because those synths sound eff-ing tough.

My My - Brown Lily

----------

Buy Anja Schneider & Sebo K

Buy My My

Please Excuse The Lull In Service

Things have been hectic. I finally got around to listening to the new "tracks" (these most certainly are not finished songs...right?) tonight, and, while the drums on "Key Bored 299 03" are fantastic, where has Beth Gibbons' voice gone?
